UiTM, Faculty of Applied Sciences (2023) BDY421: Biodiversity and Protected Area / Faculty of Applied Sciences. [Teaching Resource] (Unpublished)

Abstract

Many countries including Malaysia having protected areas as the main approach for biodiversity conservation and management. Protected areas are often viewed as islands isolated from their surroundings. However, protected areas are subject to many outside influences and in turn affect neighbouring lands. Biodiversity, protected area and its neighbours were relationships which are not just primarily ecological or physical, but also include cultural, social and economic considerations. Hence, biodiversity resources managers or other stakeholders need to stress the essential of integrating biodiversity conservation with regional development. This course will prepare the student with knowledge on protected area management and its relationship to biodiversity conservation and management. Students will be able to identify and analyze issues, concerns and opportunities related to protected area management. By the end of the semester, students are able to apply knowledge by attempting the decision-making process to develop guidelines or management plan for a protected area.
