Abstract

Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that bring harmful outcomes if infected pregnant woman. This infection gives significant effect on the neonates during pregnancy or labor. Thus, this study set out to determine the prevalence of Candidiasis and Group B Streptococcus of vaginal infection towards antenatal patients by age and races. We conducted a cross sectional study among pregnant woman who were in condition of reduced fetal movement, premature rupture of miscarriage and missed miscarriage at Specialist Hospital Sultanah Fatimah, Muar in 2017. We used Laboratory Information System (LIS) and request form to collect data onto socio demographic characteristics and medical history. Laboratory tests were conducted to identify Group B Streptococcus and candidiasis. The results show 52.4% of antenatal patients have group B streptococcus infection, 33.3% of patients have candidiasis and 14.3% of patients have both infection. Vaginal infection highly occurs to patients within 25-30 years old by 43%. 21% for the age of 20-24 years old. The patients in the age 31-35 years old and 36-40 years old are 23% and 10% respectively. The age of 40 years old and above are the least with 3%. Malay races dominate with 92% followed with Chinese by 6% and Indian by 2%. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that vaginal infection in Malaysia commonly cause by Group B Streptococcus infection rather than candidiasis. This study shows the differences between previous study when their data proves candidiasis as the commonest infection than the Group B Streptococcus in vaginal infection.
