Abstract

The Malaysian Department of Islamic Development issued a fatwa on Islamic art. The issues sprinkled with the application of the Quranic verses in Malaysian contemporary Islamic painting. In matters of Islamic painting appreciation, Muslims are divided into two groups in their understanding of the concept of Islamic paintings containing Quranic verses. There is an extremist group against the contemporary Islamic painting containing the Quranic verses, and another group appreciates the painting. The issue affected the creativity of the artists and the art appreciation of the paintings, which contained Quranic verses. The qualitative methods and theoretical framework is used to analyze the paintings. Therefore, this study is to expose the categorization of the styles of the paintings, their attributes, contents, and the axiology of the paintings. The paintings are categorized in ten styles: a) The Excellent Names of Allah (Al-Asmd' al-Husna); b) Word (kallmah); c) Letters (Hurufiyah); d) Complete Chapter (Surah); e)Complete Verse (Ayat); f) Part of a Verse (Ayat) from a Verse (Ayah); g) Two Sentences of a Chapter (Surah); h) Sentence (Ayat) and a Chapter (Surah); and, i)Verses (Ayat) and a Hadith, and, j) A Word and Du'd'. There are the traditional attributes and the SharT'ah compliance in the application of the Quranic verses in Malaysian contemporary Islamic paintings. The attributes of the paintings are faculty of mind, subject, tools, forms, and content toward philosophy. The philosophy of the paintings is goodness, good deeds, truth, and beauty. Thus, this thesis is to dispel the doubts and suspicions in the minds of hostile critics, and to increase genuine seekers of truth in the understanding of the Islamic painting containing Quranic verses. Moreover, Islam is the country's official religion and is related to the objectives of the national culture, political stabilization, industry, economy, and regulations.
