Abstract

This elective course is designed to strengthen students’ usage of English grammar for academic purposes. The course allows students to examine how English grammar works in context, both orally and in writing. It covers advanced concepts of grammar, form and usage; and practices to develop students’ competencies in communicating ideas with thoughtfulness, clarity and coherence. It also helps raise students’ awareness of their language errors and encourages the students to use error correction strategies in correcting the errors. This course encompasses a review of the eight parts of speech in the English language with an emphasis on all verb tenses as well as advanced grammar topics such as inversions with negative adverbials, mixed conditionals, modals of regret, passive forms, and phrasal verbs.
