Abstract

Known as the queen fruit, Mangosteen is a rare tropical fruit with a distinct flavour that many find difficult to describe because it is so unique. Inspired by the fruit, I developed motifs from the mangosteen and explored creating designs with detailing that is suitable in making resist textiles. From motifs and patterns, the design is enhanced using various qualities of lines. The colour extract from the mangosteen skin and core were used to make natural dyes for fabric. The layering of different colours creates a subtle but harmonious contrasting colours. The eco batik making process is different from the conventional synthetic dyed batik process. It is riskier because of the sensitivity of the dyes stuff but is safer and does not harm the environment. The handcrafted batik is naturally dyed on a four meter satin fabric.
