Abstract

A comparative study was carried out on three selected method books for beginners. The three method books chosen for this study are; 1) Suzuki Volume 1, 2) Maia Bang Part 1 and 3) A Tune A Day Book 1. The objectives of this paper are to analyse 1) The similarities and differences; and 2) The strengths and weaknesses of each method book. Qualitative content analysis (comparative approach) was adopted. Findings show that the similarities in these three method books are the same as in the elements of foundation, teaching pattern, techniques and theories. However, the differences between these three books are focused more based on their approaches. Nevertheless, these three method books cater to various types of students according to their ability and skill levels, as each book offers a unique set of approaches and learning objectives. The strengths and weaknesses of these three method books are clearly stated based on each learning outcome. The significance of these method books will help various types of communities, such as violin beginners, violin teachers and music schools. Suzuki Volume 1 emphasises listening, tonalization, accurate intonation, correct posture, proper bow hold, and the involvement of parents and teachers will strive to motivate the child. The lesson is straightforward to start, but it picks up speed rapidly. However, Maia Bang Part 1 is a comprehensive and well-organised lesson method book. It provides all the beginning steps, including an in-depth look at the techniques and finger position. The book also includes numerous illustrations, diagrams and musical examples to help students understand and apply the concept presented. Lastly, A Tune a Day Book 1 is a progressive structure method book. The content arrangement is very organised and also well-structured. As a result, it is advised that further in-depth research be done to determine how well these three methods support this study.
