Abstract

Penampang origin of the name came from an old village within the district, the village's name being inspired from the Kadazan word Pampang. The explanation behind this name was related to existence of big rock years ago. Penampang is a district with Donggongon as their main town. The name of Donggongon also originates from a Kadazan word tundo'ongon which can be understood in English word as shelter or resting area. Dunggongon from a historical view, it was playing as a popular resting place for people from the interior who journey down the coast for trading. There are multiple languages used by Penampang people. Despite that, they commonly used Malay words, especially people who live in Penampang. The statistic 2010 stated the population of Penampang around 120,000 (Department of Statistic Malaysia Official Portal, 2010)
