Abstract

As Malaysia is moving towards sustainability to preserve the environment, the government is taking initiatives to construct green and sustainable buildings. Part of having green buildings is using renewable energy such as solar energy to reduce electricity utilisation. Without electricity, the world cannot run; however, there are better alternatives to generate power in clean, sustainable, and cost-saving ways. This study focuses on the awareness of the cost-saving of electricity by using solar energy among the residents of Kuching, Sarawak. This research aims to find and understand steps needed to increase awareness of the cost-saving of using solar energy, best strategies to change the public's mindset about how solar energy can help cut down electricity cost and how the government can make better incentives for the public by using solar energy. This research adopted a survey using the questionnaire were focusing on Kuching residents with a target of 116 respondents. The results of this research are the majority are aware of the cost-saving of using solar energy and interest in installing their own solar panel. In addition, initiatives and incentives offered by the government towards the application of solar energy to encourage the respondents to use solar energy were also included in this research.
