Abstract

Recently, vandalism is reported to happened anywhere and at any part of the buildings and facilities. It is not a minor problem which can be neglected since its implication can affect the human activities and comfort. Vandalism is damaging or destroying someone else's property without their permission. Lately, vandalism is most likely to occur in the residential which have higher number of population such as apartment. Low cost apartments with various backgrounds of the respondents are likely to be areas of vandalism. The aim of this study is to study the occupants' perception on vandalism at low cost apartment in Petaling Jaya. The first objective of this study is to identify the condition of facilities provided in Low Cost Apartment in Petaling Jaya. The second objective is to identify causes of vandalism in Low Cost Apartment in Petaling Jaya. The third objective is to recommend solutions in order to control vandalism in Low Cost Apartment in Petaling Jaya. In order to obtain the data, questionnaire were distributed to the residents in selected three case studies. Three selected case studies located in Petaling Jaya which is Desa Mentari Apartment, Taman Putra Damai Apartment and Taman Medan Cahaya Apartment. Based on the analysis, it is found that most of the facilities made of metal components are tend to be a victim of vandalism thus the condition of those facilities in a poor condition and the level of the frequency being damaged is frequent. Apart from that, major causes of vandalism and recommended solution to control the vandalism also are pointed out. Data were gathered, analyzed and presented according to research question accordingly. Recommendation was also presented to further improve future study on this area. Hopefully from the recommendations suggested can help to solve the vandalism problems in residences so that comforts of the residents are improved.
