Abstract

Problems of solid waste disposal have become a major issue in Malaysia. The rapid development in Malaysia and the increasing urban population have led to the increasing amount of waste generated. Recycling is one of the methods towards improving the problem of the solid waste management and to minimize the solid waste generation. Primary data were collected through field activities which are; collecting, sorting, weighting, paying, and storing of recyclables. In addition structured questionnaire was estimated. Results from the analysis of primary data were verified using secondary data obtained from Alam Flora Sdn Bhd. The data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel. This study shows the range of major recyclables collected at Community Recycling Centre, Precint 8 to be 335 to 1183, 24 to 38, 4 to 88 and 3 to 40 kg per week for paper, plastic, steel and aluminium respectively. Based on the primary data, the weekly economic value of recyclables collected is RM 748.94 and the economic potential of recyclables collected at Precint 8 is RM 2, 0339.05. From the survey that had been conducted, overall respondents were aware and participated in the recycling program.
