Abstract

The issue of solid waste management is the biggest challenge for local authorities in both small and large cities in developing countries. This is mainly due to the increased production of such solid waste and the burden borne on the municipal budget. Common issues in solid waste management methods such as waste collection, irregular waste disposal and lack of recycling bins as well as public knowledge of the importance of recycling. The purpose of this study is to find out the role of local authorities (MDPT) in solid waste management in residential areas in Bandar Seri Iskandar. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the level of management of local authorities in managing solid waste in residential areas. This study uses a qualitative approach by using the method of interviewing local authority officials to obtain data on solid waste management in the housing area of Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak. This study has found that the management performed by the local authority is good and managed with the right conditions in the residential area in the study area. However, there is lack of solid waste minimisation, such as lack of recycling bins, not providing recycling centers and do not have any campaign on 3R’s concept to the residents. In addition, the study recommends several methods to deal with problems such as providing recycling bins for each resident in their area, providing recycling center in good location and provide the knowledge and attitude programs to residents with the importance for the environment. Further, management dan minimisation by local authorities should be enhanced for the benefit of all communities and the environment. In addition, the supervision of facilities to the residents in the housing area must also be implemented well to ensure the level of solid waste management in an orderly manner.
