Abstract

Active learning pedagogies and game design elements offer promising mechanisms for overcoming the limitations of traditional, lecture-based instruction in foundational business education. This qualitative classroom study examines the implementation of structured, four week progressive learning challenges designed to enhance conceptual understanding and vocabulary acquisition among pre-diploma students enrolled in the Introduction to Business course at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Segamat. Drawing upon gamification principles and self-determination theory, the intervention scaffolds learning tasks from initial recall and terminology mastery such as collaborative word puzzle challenges focusing on core business concepts to complex problem solving activities. While initial student responses were marked by hesitation and instructor dependency rooted in prior passive instructional experiences, small-group peer collaboration and immediate formative feedback mitigated task anxiety and fostered intrinsic motivation. The findings demonstrate that strategically designed, interactive learning challenges promote social interaction, peer scaffolding, and sustained cognitive engagement, providing practical insights for educators seeking to design motivating, academically rigorous learning environments for lower-level undergraduate cohorts.
