Abstract

Professional development in higher education is an ongoing, systematic endeavor through which academic staff enhance their pedagogical competence, subject-matter expertise, and research capabilities to improve student learning outcomes and career efficacy. This reflective paper examines the trajectories of professional growth among economics educators at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), contextualized within national development imperatives such as Gross National Product (GNP) growth and balance of payments stabilization. Tracing the educational pathway from secondary-level foundations in microeconomics and macroeconomics to specialized tertiary disciplines, the study highlights the critical role of advanced academic credentials. While a bachelor's degree establishes fundamental theoretical and analytical skills, the acquisition of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and sustained involvement in rigorous research are essential drivers of academic leadership. In accordance with UiTM’s institutional vision, the paper demonstrates that continuous research engagement, high-impact publication, and doctoral qualification are vital mechanisms for advancing pedagogical delivery and societal impact in economics education.
