Abstract

The incorporation of artificial intelligence into heritage-oriented design practices offers novel avenues for creative collaboration, while simultaneously prompting inquiries into cultural authenticity and material sensitivity. This research introduces a cognitive interface framework that elucidates how human–AI co-creation can enhance creative design processes within a Design Thinking framework. By merging concepts from the Task–Technology Fit (TTF) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the study investigates the interplay between designer attributes, AI tool functionalities, and task demands in shaping effective collaborative settings. The initial phase entails the cultural assessment of AI-generated proposals, wherein designers interpret computational results through symbolic meanings and heritage-based aesthetic principles. The second phase emphasizes the adaptation of these outputs to meet the physical and structural limitations of the material, underscoring the significance of tactile knowledge and material responsiveness. The concluding phase involves collaborative optimization, where iterative refinement between human expertise and algorithmic generation culminates in culturally coherent and technically viable design results. The findings further suggest a tripartite factor structure of cognitive adaptability, which includes technical function adaptability, cultural value adaptability, and cognitive interaction adaptability. Collectively, these dimensions demonstrate how AI systems can transcend mere automated generation to provide culturally attuned design support. The study concludes that effective human–AI co-creation requires the alignment of algorithmic logic with the tacit knowledge of artisans, enabling technology to function not merely as a tool but as a cultural mediator within contemporary design practice.
