A recent study evaluated the microbiological safety of high-value vegetables grown in alternative cultivation systems using various biodegradable cellulose hydrogel formulations and irrigation schedules. Testing a large sample size across multiple vegetable types revealed that aerobic bacterial counts varied while harmful pathogens like Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus were completely absent from all samples. Furthermore, specific mixtures combining the hydrogel with topsoil successfully lowered total bacterial counts compared to traditional controls while also optimizing water use. These findings highlight that integrating biodegradable cellulose hydrogel into farming practices can significantly improve produce safety and water efficiency for sustainable agriculture.
