Federal Land Development Authority or Felda was formed on July 1, 1956 under the Land Development Ordinance (Land Development Ordinance) 1956. Felda is a Malaysian government agency that was founded to handle the resettlement of rural poor into newly developed areas and to organise smallholder farms growing cash crops. Since the 1990s, it has not established new settlements, but has engaged in a diversified range of economic development and business activities. FELDA function provided for under the Act (Amendment 1991), are as follows:
a) Carry out and implement land development projects.
b) Develop, facilitate, and implement economic, social, agricultural, placement, industrial and commercial development, management and services and other ancillary activities in areas where FELDA is empowered to undertake land or land development projects owned by FELDA and its companies.
c) Carry out activities that can help modernize the agricultural sector in areas where FELDA is authorized to administer it, especially in activities related to the production, processing, and marketing of agricultural produce and livestock products.
d) Help, guide, advise, manage, and coordinate social activities, settlement, agriculture, industrial and commercial in the FELDA.
Starting from April 2004, FELDA is placed under the Prime Minister Office and the minister in charge of FELD A is Y.A.B. Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
