UiTM Sarawak launches car-free hours and plogging day 2026

Universiti Teknologi MARA Sarawak Branch (UiTMCS) marked another milestone in its sustainability transformation journey with the launch of the Car Free Hours and Plogging Day 2026 Programme in conjunction with the Green Campus Movement 2026 (GCM2026) at the Student Centre, UiTMCS Samarahan Campus. Organised by the Campus Sustainability Committee (LESTARI) and the Student Residence and Hospitality Unit (URHP), the programme forms part of the university's broader Low Carbon Campus (LCC) agenda and ongoing commitment to fostering a greener and more sustainable campus environment. The event made history as, for the first time, all vehicles were prohibited from entering the UiTMCS Samarahan Campus for three hours, from 6.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. Although implemented for a limited period, the initiative represents an important first step towards promoting sustainable mobility practices and reducing carbon emissions within the campus community. The launch was attended by Professor Dr. Firdaus Abdullah, Rector of UiTM Sarawak, Associate Professor Dr. Saimi Bujang, Deputy Rector of Student Affairs, Puan Siti Nur Aisshah Jaafar, Chairperson of PEWANI UiTMCS, Ts. Dr. Noorsaidi Mahat, Coordinator of the UiTMCS Sustainability Committee, En. Suhardi bin Kram, Programme Coordinator, members of the organising committee, students and invited guests. The programme also highlighted the importance of collective participation in achieving sustainability goals. Building upon previous initiatives such as tree planting programmes, reductions in utility and paper consumption, and the installation of water refill stations across campus, UiTMCS continues to encourage environmentally responsible practices among its community. Through initiatives such as plogging and sustainable mobility, the university aims to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship and position itself as a leading model for green campus development and sustainable higher education in Malaysia.
