UiTM Sarawak launches green, low carbon and sustainable campus initiative

Universiti Teknologi MARA Sarawak Branch (UiTMCS) marked a significant milestone in its sustainability transformation journey with the launch of the Green, Low Carbon and Sustainable Campus Initiative at the Student Centre, UiTMCS Samarahan Campus. The initiative, led by the Campus Sustainability Committee (LESTARI) and the Student Residence and Hospitality Unit (URHP), introduced ten new sustainability initiatives aimed at strengthening the university's commitment towards a greener and more environmentally responsible campus. The event was attended by members of the university management, Professor Dr Firdaus Abdullah Rector, including Associate Professor Dr. Saimi Bujang, Deputy Rector of Student Affairs, Professor Ir. Dr. Juferi Idris, Deputy Rector of Research and Industrial Linkages, Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Razak Abdul Kadir, Assistant Rector of Samarahan 2 Campus, and Ts. Dr. Noorsaidi Mahat, Coordinator of the UiTMCS Sustainability Committee. The launch also featured several key green initiatives, including the introduction of Water Refill Stations (WRS), Water Thimble Devices (WTD) and Air Quality Sensors (AQS), alongside the appointment of the UiTM Rakan Alam Sekitar Ambassadors (URASA) Sarawak to serve as sustainability champions among students. The Low Carbon Campus initiative represents more than a simple awareness campaign; it reflects UiTMCS's long-term commitment to embedding sustainable practices and green lifestyles among students, staff, vendors and strategic partners. Key initiatives include reducing single-use plastics, promoting the 5R principles, improving energy and water efficiency, enhancing campus greening efforts and encouraging green mobility to reduce carbon emissions. Through these efforts, UiTMCS aims to strengthen its contribution towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda while positioning itself as a leading model of a sustainable and low-carbon university campus by 2030.
