Sustainable classroom: cultivating a culture of sustainability through learning spaces

SHAH ALAM, 19 June 2026 – Guided by the aspiration of fostering a sustainable campus culture, the Landscape Management and Amenity Association, in collaboration with the Space Committee, Landscape and Amenity Management Programme, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, organised the Sustainable Classroom Programme on 19 June 2026 to promote responsibility, teamwork, and appreciation for shared learning spaces. The programme was officiated by Ts. Dr. Nor Hanisah Mohd Hashim, Head of Undergraduate Studies (Landscape and Amenity Management), who highlighted the importance of maintaining a conducive learning environment through shared responsibility. The programme began with a Surah Yasin recitation, followed by Sustainable Classroom activities that encouraged students to create cleaner, more organised, and comfortable learning spaces while fostering a sense of ownership towards university facilities. The initiative emphasised that sustainability begins with simple yet consistent daily practices, such as respecting shared spaces, using facilities responsibly, and maintaining a clean and conducive learning environment. It also strengthened teamwork, communication, and collective responsibility among students. The programme supports UiTM's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). It demonstrates that meaningful progress towards a sustainable campus begins with positive values, everyday actions, and the shared commitment of the university community.
