Perception of sunscreens among FSKM UiTM Shah Alam citizens using the fuzzy conjoint method

Sun’s rays carry ultraviolet that are harmful to our health. Hence, sunscreens were formulated in order to hinder the harmful effect by absorbing or reflecting the radiations. However, without having proper knowledge about sunscreen, they are actually ruining their health to various diseases such as sunburn and melanoma cancer. Thus, main aim of this research is to investigate students’ and lecturers’ perception towards sunscreen using the fuzzy conjoint method. A total of 209 respondents consist of students and lecturers in the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM) at MARA University of Technology (UiTM) Shah Alam were given a set of questionnaires. The results were analysed using Fuzzy Conjoint Method. The majority of the respondents ‘Strongly Agree’ that women use sunscreen more frequently than men (similarity degree = 0.79798) and they always apply sunscreen before going out as it is beneficial to their skin (similarity degree = 0.78411). There are respondents who also ‘Strongly Disagree’ that applying sunscreen is time consuming (similarity degree = 0.29061, rank = 12). The result shows that majority of the students and lecturers in the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences are aware on the important of sunscreen in order to protect skin cells from ageing, sunburn and reduces the risk of having skin cancer. For further study, the researchers can expand the sample by using different background economic, rural or urban or education or gender as we may get better and comprehensive results.
