Abstract
This study sets out to investigate the current state of microfinance in China, with a special focus on microcredit and its effects on small business owners. This research was motivated in part by the fact that nearly 30% of the Chinese population does not have access to traditional banking services because of factors such as location, income level, credit history, or identification documents. The study aims to extend the discussion on financial inclusion by focusing on microfinance in economically disadvantaged areas of China, particularly its coastal provinces. Two methods were employed to conduct this investigation. First, online focus groups were held with local microcredit executives, most of whom were based in major cities such as Shanghai. These discussions provided first-hand insights from individuals who frequently conduct financial transactions in challenging environments. To complement the data, the researchers also interviewed Chinese digital product management specialists. Data were collected and analyzed through focus groups and in-depth interviews with subject-matter experts. A qualitative methodology was selected because of the complexity of microfinance operations and the challenges associated with financial inclusion in China. The findings indicate that microcredit plays a crucial role in supporting microentrepreneurs, especially those in marginalized communities. However, significant barriers remain, including strict credit qualification requirements and associated financial costs. The study also emphasizes the importance of digital transformation in microfinance and its potential to improve financial inclusion. It highlights the need to develop effective digitalization strategies that consider multiple factors to enhance access to financial services for underserved communities. In addition, the findings demonstrate the important role of regulatory policies in promoting financial inclusion. The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive analysis of the Chinese microfinance industry using first-hand information obtained from microfinance practitioners and digital product specialists. Therefore, the study provides valuable implications for policymakers and practitioners in China and other countries seeking to expand access to financial services.
