Exploring the efficacy of digital art therapy in enhancing social communication for autistic children in Malaysia

Digital Art Therapy (DAT) integrates traditional art-making with digital technologies to support emotional expression, social communication, and engagement in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In Malaysia, where conventional therapies may face accessibility and engagement challenges, DAT offers a flexible and inclusive approach. This study investigates the effectiveness of DAT for children aged 6–10 at the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) Titiwangsa branch. Using a mixed-methods design, qualitative observations, interviews, and artwork analyses were combined with quantitative progress assessments to evaluate therapy outcomes. Findings indicate that DAT enhances emotional regulation, social communication, and creative engagement, particularly for non-verbal participants. The research also identifies digital tools, artwork types, and design elements that optimize therapeutic benefits. The study contributes to the development of structured DAT programs in Malaysia and informs policy and practice for integrating digital art interventions in healthcare and education. It highlights the potential of digital art as a culturally adaptable, accessible, and evidence-based therapeutic tool for neurodiverse children.
