Was Shakespeare gay? the mystery that lives between the lines

This line is one of the most famous expressions of love in English literature. However, many readers are surprised to learn that in several of Shakespeare’s early sonnets, the person he praises is not a woman, but a young man, often called the “Fair Youth.” This raises a question that frequently appears in literature classrooms: Was Shakespeare gay? The debate has continued for centuries. In the sonnets, Shakespeare describes the young man’s beauty with deep admiration and emotional intensity, writing about love, jealousy, devotion, and longing, like when he calls him “nature’s masterwork” in Sonnet 20 or promises that his “eternal summer shall not fade” in Sonnet 18.
