Abstract

When discussing employee behaviour, companies need to understand the needs of their employees, as employees are a vital element in achieving organisational goals. This understanding enables organisations to formulate strategies that enhance employee job satisfaction. In response to this issue, this study examines the effect of work–life balance on employee job satisfaction through the mediating role of work motivation among employees of PT Perkebunan Nusantara VI. Four research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A survey research design was employed using structured questionnaires administered to respondents. The population consisted of all employees at the head office of PT Perkebunan Nusantara VI. A simple random sampling method was used to obtain an unbiased representation of the population, resulting in a sample of 70 respondents. The collected data were analysed using SmartPLS version 3.3.9. The findings indicate that work–life balance has a positive but insignificant effect on employee job satisfaction. However, work–life balance has a positive and significant effect on work motivation. Furthermore, work motivation has a positive and significant effect on employee job satisfaction and serves as a mediating variable in the relationship between work–life balance and job satisfaction. Based on these findings, it is recommended that companies implement specific policies and programmes that promote employees’ work–life balance in order to achieve higher levels of job satisfaction.
