Abstract
The global demand for skin whitening products is largely driven by cultural preferences for lighter skin tones. The over-the-counter skin lightening products, such as creams, serums and moisturisers are designed to inhibit melanin production, which ultimately reduces hyperpigmentation, scars and uneven skin tone. These products consist of ingredients derived either from natural, semi- synthetic or synthetic sources, each of which impacts safety and efficacy differently. Synthetic agents like hydroquinone and mercury-based compounds were historically prevalent; however, growing awareness of their adverse effects has spurred a shift toward natural alternatives. With rising consumer demand for safe and sustainable solutions, the skincare trend now favours natural and evidence-based ingredients over harsh synthetic chemicals. This paper aims to investigate the scientific basis of plant-derived skin whitening ingredients, based on Malaysia's emerging e’thereal Lumi Radiance product line as a case study. It is Malaysia-developed product. It was conceived, designed and engineered through a strategic collaboration between the Johor-based R&D team and local education institutes. This review paper aims to investigate the mechanisms of action, clinical evidence and synergistic effects of key botanicals such as Glycyrrhiza glabra and Oryza sativa. The study also focuses on Malaysia's evolving regulatory framework, emphasising the significance of COSMOS and ECOCERT certifications in guaranteeing product safety and sustainability. Our research indicates that while natural whitening agents offer promising alternatives, standardised clinical validation and stricter regulatory oversight remain imperative for ensuring consumer safety.
