Abstract
Tourism has long been one of Malaysia’s main economic drivers, but the sector is now under pressure to respond to environmental challenges. In line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the government is pushing for a greener direction, especially with the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY 2026) campaign. The VMY 2026 target is ambitious, 35.6 million visitors and RM147.1 billion in revenue. While sustainability is promoted as a central theme, the real issue is how operators can balance profitability with the cost of adopting new green practices.
