Understanding the cultural sustainability in Kedah Royal Heritage: the conservation of Masjid Zahir as a colonial-era cultural icon

Masjid Zahir, located along the Kedah River in Alor Setar, stands as one of Malaysia’s oldest and most architecturally significant mosques. Constructed in memory of 1,489 Muslim martyrs who perished during the Siamese invasion of Kedah in 1821, the mosque symbolizes the spiritual and historical resilience of the Kedahan people. As a landmark tied closely to the legacy of Kedah royalty, Masjid Zahir continues to represent a vital element of cultural heritage. However, there is an increasing concern over the gradual erosion of cultural values associated with the royal institution, largely due to limited community awareness and engagement in heritage conservation. This research explores the role of Masjid Zahir in sustaining the cultural identity of the local community and in reinforcing the historical significance of Kedah’s royal heritage. The study employs site observation and a case study approach to examine conservation practices and the mosque’s enduring cultural relevance. The findings underscore the importance of integrating heritage conservation with cultural sustainability, offering valuable insights into preserving royal heritage icons within the context of a changing society.
