Abstract

Lecturers play a crucial role in promoting meaningful learning by designing environments that encourage students to progress beyond mere memorization and strive toward deep understanding and transferable knowledge. Recent research in higher education shows that learning is enhanced when there is a coherent alignment between intended outcomes, teaching methods, and assessments. Constructive alignment enables students to actively construct knowledge rather than passively absorb information (Hamdoun, 2023). Despite these insights, engaging younger university students in meaningful learning remains challenging. Many of today’s learners, who are immersed in pervasive digital environments and frequent rapid‑paced media consumption, often exhibit shortened attention spans and tend to engage in surface‑level information processing. This tendency can lead to a reliance on easily accessible digital content instead of deeper cognitive engagement (Haliti‑Sylaj & Sadiku, 2024; Poles, 2025). Previous research suggests that students raised in digitally saturated environments benefit from pedagogical approaches that move beyond traditional lecture-based instruction. These methods are essential for sustaining cognitive engagement and supporting deep conceptual understanding. Consequently, lecturers face the challenge of aligning their teaching methods with students’ learning preferences while preserving academic rigor. Addressing this tension requires an intentional approach to instructional design that emphasizes sustained attention and cognitive effort, as well as provides opportunities for reflection, rather than passive consumption of digital content (Sun et al., 2025).
