From likes to learning: a scoping review of student difficulties in utilizing social media for education

Social media is used as an education tool that provides easy access to information. This scoping review investigates the difficulties faced by students when utilizing social media for education. The review is based on 23 selected articles obtained from ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Scopus, categorizes the challenges and findings into five themes: i) information challenges, ii) student learning difficulties, iii) ethical and security concerns, iv) pedagogical and communication barriers, and v) accessibility and social limitations. Moreover, the study reveals that students struggle to utilize social media for educational purposes because of these challenges. In addition to the challenges students face, educators may have difficulty understanding the challenges of modern education. By exploring the challenges, this paper provides valuable insights for researchers to understand the difficulties students encounter when utilizing social media for education, and helps address challenges in improving the quality of education for students and educators.
