Bridging knowledge and practice in primary care asthma and COPD management

This article examines the critical strategies required to bridge the gap between clinical guidelines and actual clinical practice in the primary care management of asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Despite the availability of robust evidence-based protocols, such as the GINA and GOLD guidelines, translation into routine primary care often faces barriers including time constraints, diagnostic ambiguity, and limited access to spirometry. This paper analyzes multi-faceted interventions—ranging from continuous medical education (CME) and electronic health record (EHR) decision-support tools to multidisciplinary care teams involving pharmacists and respiratory therapists. The findings demonstrate that structured, localized implementation strategies significantly improve diagnostic accuracy, optimization of inhaler techniques, and patient adherence, ultimately reducing exacerbation rates and enhancing the quality of life for patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
