Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the fire risk assessment requirements in heritage museum buildings. This research opted to use qualitative methods on three selected National Heritage Buildings (gazetted under National Heritage Act, 2005). Purposive sampling from secondary sources is used to evaluate the risk of fire in historic museum buildings. The findings of this research are to improve the level of safety of the heritage museum buildings and with the implementation of fire safety requirements. This research is limited to three heritage museum building listed as National Heritage Act 2005 in the Kuala Lumpur region. This research investigates by assessing and improving PART VII and Part VIII from Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL) 1984, heritage museum can be better preserved, reducing the risk of fire damage or destruction and protecting invaluable artifacts, documents and cultural heritage housed within these buildings. The research social implications include by implementing effective fire protection measures it can ensure the safety of tourists and staff and helps maintain uninterrupted access to these attractions, preserving their appeal and economic contribution to the tourism sector especially for future generations of visitors to enjoy and learn. This research originality focuses on balancing fire safety and historical preservation in heritage buildings using both passive and active fire protection systems. The study helps to ensure these buildings remain safe, legally compliant and eligible for government support while preserving their historical value.
