Abstract

Waqf cemeteries constitute a significant component of the Islamic wealth system, offering perpetual burial space for Muslim communities. The rising demand for cemeteries, driven by population growth and urban development, presents challenges in spatial optimisation and sustainable management. This study aims to identify the factors contributing to the sustainability of waqf cemeteries through a review of literature on land use strategies, environmental conservation practices, and governance frameworks. This research employs a qualitative methodology, systematically analysing secondary sources including academic journals, official reports, and pertinent policy documents. The results indicate that efficient spatial planning, the implementation of eco-friendly burial techniques, and digital mapping systems can enhance the sustainability of waqf cemeteries. Nonetheless, regulatory challenges, community awareness, and financial limitations persist as significant impediments to this optimisation endeavour. This study emphasises the necessity for a comprehensive Waqf cemetery management model to reconcile religious duties with contemporary sustainability principles. This study's findings inform policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the efficiency and environmental sustainability of waqf cemetery management in Malaysia and worldwide.
