Abstract
This article is inspired by my initial book review of Arabella by Georgette Heyer, and I thought it would be interesting to reimagine the plot with a Malay twist, set in Segamat, Johor, Malaysia. What would happen if the witty Regency-era heroine, Arabella Tallant, were transformed into a modern Malay character, navigating the complexities of family expectations and love in a small town? Let's explore how this plot might unfold in a local context, with a cotemporary, culturally rich backdrop. Segamat, Johor, with its quiet charm and strong community ties, offers a fascinating modern-day setting for this romantic plot. Unlike the grand estates of Regency England, Segamat's humble family homes, local cafes, and food stalls become the perfect backdrop for a tale of social status, love, and deception. The town's agricultural roots and close-knit nature would add a layer of intrigue, where everyone knows everyone's business, and gossip spreads quickly. This dynamic could play a vital role in the unfolding drama of Aisyah (the modern-day version of Arabella), her family, and her blossoming romance.
