From periodic table to playground: how a chemist and a coder created a digital textbook

Abstract

While the Periodic Table is an invaluable tool for scientists, non-science majors often find it abstract and unengaging because atomic interactions are invisible and static on paper. To bridge this gap, a collaborative digital transformation project combined the expertise of a Chemist and a Designer to bring the table to life using powerful spreadsheet database logic. Phase 1 focused on building the "Rulebook" foundation, where the chemist programmed real-world elemental properties and "If-Then" logic into a hidden sheet, establishing the laws necessary for the computer to automatically categorize and animate the elements.
