Floxel: half-display cabinet

The Floxel Half-Display Cabinet is a furniture piece that seamlessly blends modern contemporary design with Malaysia’s traditional craft heritage. The name Floxel is derived from the combination of “floral” and “pixel,” symbolizing the reinterpretation of traditional floral kelarai weaving through modern geometric forms. Designed as both a functional storage solution and an artistic statement, Floxel showcases a thoughtful mix of materials, including pinewood for the main body and base, plywood for the display rack, metal for structural support, and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) made from nipa palm midrib sticks for the weaving frames. Its woven panels are crafted using the Anyaman Silang Ganda technique, combining cream-colored fabric with green-dyed nipa palm midrib sticks to create a vibrant floral pattern with a modern twist. The development of Floxel explored the usability and durability of nipa palm midrib sticks as a primary weaving material. A series of experiments tested weaving density, flexibility, and moisture treatment to enhance both the strength and visual quality of the woven panels. Collaborative efforts with material texturing and dyeing studies refined the design process and ensured alignment with sustainable practices. The half-display format of Floxel balances enclosed storage with open shelving, making it suitable for living rooms, galleries, or spaces that value cultural storytelling. By merging clean geometric lines with handcrafted woven elements, Floxel represents harmony between tradition and modernity, while promoting the use of sustainable, locally sourced materials. It is both eco-friendly and culturally meaningful, embodying the evolution of traditional weaving into modern furniture design.
