Mr Jamal: an Arabic e-learning mobile application for UiTM students

Recently, the University of Technology Mara (UiTM) Arau, Perlis students learned their Arabic subject through conventional teaching and learning within a brick-and-mortar classroom facility method. The conventional way of learning caused students to feel bored and easy to lost their focus during the learning process. This mobile application provides an e-Learning type of learning process. This type of learning conducted via electronic media, usually on the Internet. The purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, this mobile application is to develop a mobile application of Arabic learning for UiTM students called Mr. Jamal. Second, to examine the user’s acceptance using Mr. Jamal application and its ability as a supporting tool to learn the Arabic language. This project developed in Android Studio using JAVA language. This mobile application add-on listening skills that can be used to enhance students’ performance to learn the Arabic language. The significance of this project is to help students of UiTM to learn Arabic words by themselves using the mobile application easier using the conventional way and also to encourage students to have more enthusiasm to learn the Arabic language. The waterfall model is used for the development model. This model is sequential and downwards design process. In this project, there will be six phases involved which are Information Gathering, Project Requirement, Systems Design, Systems Development, Testing, and Documentation. The developed mobile application is evaluated by 30 respondents through acceptance and functionality testing. The aspects evaluated are Perceived Ease of Use, Perceive of Usefulness, E-Learning Self-Efficacy, Enjoyment and also the Functionality. Most of the users agreed that all the buttons and menus were functioning well. However, to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of this mobile application, some features need to be added like the writing skills to able students to write Arabic words and check it whether it is true or false.
