GPS based e-attendance system for lecturers in UiTM Perlis branch

Attendance refers to the action of going regularly to or being present at a place or event. The methods used for attendance were usually punch card and thumbprint. These two methods were used to record the employee attendance to check the availability of the employee. Previously, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perlis branch is using punch card and being replaced by thumbprint method to record employee attendance. Thumbprint attendance system used biometric device to allow employee to scan their thumbprint for attendance identification. Since thumbprint attendance system use thumb itself, it is found that the employee have difficulties in accessing the biometric device because of the weather, physical conditions and other problems. Thus, this project proposed is to develop a mobile based attendance system using built-in GPS feature in a smartphone. The second objective is to evaluate the mobile based attendance system. The system was developed using Android Studio with the Firebase as a database of a system. The developed mobile application is evaluated by thirty UiTM Perlis lecturers through usability testing. The aspects evaluated are from perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The result shows that 40% of users agreed that the GPS Based E-Attendance System is a useful system. While, 46.67% users strongly agreed that the system is easy to use. Hence, the significance of this project are lecturers do not need to move back and forth from one building to another building, provides lecturers with a convenient situation, easy to access and reduce paperwork use and decrease human effort as well. However, some features need to be improve in future works which is the application should be able to generate attendance report by displaying clock in and clock out time for previous date.
