Abstract

Science laboratories are filled with biological materials, hazardous chemicals and equipment. Understanding the importance of laboratory safety is vital as the laboratories reap a wide array of safety hazard from the chemicals to electric equipment. Anyone who are using the science laboratory especially students need to know the potential danger that may occurs in handling the experiments. The problem occurs when the students unable to follow the rules and safety in the laboratory and injuries or accidents happened. However, the staffs need to make a report about the incidents using paper-based form of reporting which is cumbersome as paper files unable the user to easily edit the content forcing to make a new copy. Thus, this study is aimed to develop a web-based reporting system on accidents for Science Laboratory and integrate itnwith Short Message Service (SMS) known as (SLARS). The Waterfall Model has been used as the methodology in this study. Then, SLARS is evaluated using Expert Review and Usability Test. Expert Review was conducted with an expertise in Information Technology (IT) and 12 participants contributed in the Usability Test where consist of five sections; the interface, the content of the system, the navigation of the system, the function, and general feedback. The findings from the evaluation indicates that the information provided within the system can help users to make a report on the incidents happened and the system is well-designed to be implemented in the future.
