Abstract

Wild boar is an undeniable pest for oil palm plantations especially to the new planting, replanting and nursery that the property located adjacent to jungle. The damage of wild boar are mostly involved palms damage or dead, decrease of palm stand and lower early yield. This write up encompasses to determine the effective control on wild boar pest under new planting jungle to oil palm. Effective wild pig control can give great positive impact to the oil palm plantation industry. Hence, identify the wild boar problem from early stage is important. This includes confirming the pest as wild boar and studying their moving pattern. After that, draft and plan using the information gathered to form a solution of single or multiple controls depends on the frequency of attack and population of wild boar. Fencing, trenching and harassing are the most effective controls if the location and perimeter is within reach. However, if the population of wild boar is too big where deter of wild boar is no longer sufficient, it is advised to use traps, snares, poisoning bait or even hunting to reduce the population before fencing, trenching and harassing can be practiced. Other than that, from agronomic point of view, it is recommended to supply with overgrown seedlings or advance planting material (aged 16 to 18 months) instead of young palm seedlings to the field because these material may be less susceptible to wild boar attack. Furthermore, to reduce the cost of individual palm protection using collar, it is also recommended to protect the palms by stacking of wooden barricade surrounding those palms. This can save some material cost. However, the installation procedure is more complicated. Furthermore, it is important for the estate management to remind and encourage the workers not to kill the predator for wild boar such as clouded leopard. These animals can help to reduce and keep the population of wild boar in manner.
