Turning plastic pollution into art: UiTM Sarawak duo claim top awards

Sarawak, 2025 - With their artwork The Unforgettable Tales, two senior academics from UiTM Sarawak's Faculty of Art and Design, Mohd Razif Mohd Rathi and Dr. Muhammad Fauzan Abu Bakar, took home the Grand Prize and People's Choice Award at ASM Art Science 2025. The work combines art, design, artificial intelligence, and sustainability to emphasize plastic pollution through a dystopian marine motif. Only five finalists were chosen for exhibition at the National Science Center out of 107 entries submitted countrywide for the competition, which had as its theme "Art Transformation: The Integration of AI and Sustainability." Since its establishment in 2019, ASM Art Science has grown into a prominent platform that bridges art and science, fostering interdisciplinary creativity and innovation in Malaysia. The success of The Unforgettable Tales not only reflects the strength of this initiative, but also highlights the calibre of talent within the UiTM Sarawak community. The achievement stands as a proud moment for the institution, affirming that UiTM Sarawak continues to produce educators and creators capable of meaningfully integrating art, design, sustainability, and emerging technologies while making a resonant impact on national and public discourse.
