Abstract

According to Farrel (2013), action research in the second language education is associated with the study of classroom actions. This can be observed from many angles, such as in the researcher as the teacher, the students, or even in the materials used in classroom learning. Action research is also used by teachers to try out different methods to teach certain language components. According to McCucheon and Jurg (1990), action research can be defined as a "systemic inquiry that is collective, collaborative, self-reflective, critical and undertaken by participants in the inquiry." There are many books written about how to conduct action research. For example, Curry (2003) provides six steps of action research in the classroom. First, the researcher needs to ask question about the new method of teaching, for example "how do students feel about using this new method in classroom learning?" Second, the researcher can proceed to clarify the question and link it to specific method of data collection. This is the stage where the researcher prepares the groundwork in order to make sure the new method is supported by theoretical framework. Third, the researcher can then define the data collection contexts, time frames, and collecting data. Fourth, the researcher analyses all the data collected. Fifth, new knowledge is made public when the new method is presented.
