Abstract

This book focuses on the management and description of financial institutions in Malaysia. This is due to several reasons: 1. Students of finance need to be acquainted with various types of financial institutions, and the various products and services that they offer in Malaysia. 2. Technological development, together with the expansion of financial activities pertinent to Islamic banking as permitted by the regulators, has produced new challenges and opportunities for financial institution managers. This requires the need for financial management skills. 3. Most students taking courses in finance will eventually seek employment with financial institutions. Thus, knowledge of the principles guiding financial management will help students to understand the structure of Malaysian financial institutions and their legislation. This book gives an overview of financial institutions and the structure of Malaysian financial systems as discussed in Chapter 1 and 2. Chapter 3 focuses on the functions of the regulatory authority: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), followed by a description of the regulatory framework for Malaysian financial institutions. The book also examines the concept of the financial market: involving the money market, foreign exchange market, capital market as well as the derivative market. Due to many changes that have taken place in the banking industry over the years, the author has decided to familiarise students and other readers with electronic banking systems. This can be found in Chapter 7 of this book. Chapter 8 discusses the management of banks' non-performing loans. Chapter 9 which is the final chapter then examines the concept of the Islamic financial system in Malaysia, covering the principles and the types of Islamic banking products. Since the book covers management at the policy level, it should help to provide readers with a framework for understanding the material presented. In particular, it will create a better understanding of why particular institutions choose to implement certain policies, and why the financial system behaves as it does. The Development of Financial Institutions in Malaysia is also designed for both diploma and undergraduate students at various colleges and universities in Malaysia. Prior coursework in banking operations and banking ethics would be helpful in understanding the material. However, a student who does not possess any prior knowledge should still be able to understand the text with careful reading.
