Abstract

This article describes the works done with solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) based on chitosan, poly (vinylchloride) (PVC), poly (ethylmethacrylate) (PEMA) and some polymer blends of PVC/ PEMA. The article begins with an introduction to solid polymer electrolytes. The importance of solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) attributed to, but not limited to, its application in lithium batteries is highlighted. Some issues regarding modulation of ionic conductivity with respect to polymer structure, glass transition temperature and ionic conduction pathways are also highlighted. This is followed by an explanation as to why the polymers chitosan, PVC, PEMA and some of their blends have been chosen and how they could work as ionic conductors. Some methods of preparation of polymer electrolytes are also highlighted. Characterisation techniques to show evidence of cation-polymer chelation such as XRD and FTIR are discussed. The ionic conductivity has been determined from complex impedance measurements. Increment in ionic conductivity by addition of plasticisers and/or fillers is discussed next together with the role played by temperature. Other impedance formalisms are also included in the discussion. Finally, some characteristics of the batteries fabricated using the above polymers are shared.
