Malaysia is endowed with immensely rich biodiversity, vast and diverse flora and fauna. Our tropical rainforest stores a large collection of plant species, animals, insects and microorganisms. Such co-existence in the humid climate creates complex interactions between the living organisms. It is estimated that about 14,000 species of higher plants and about 2,000 species of lower plants are available in Peninsular Malaysia. Besides the rich and diverse flora heritage Malaysia's blend of multiracial societies and ethnic groups posses broad traditional knowledge about the folkloric uses of many plants for healthcare and other purposes. About 16% of these plants are claimed to be used for medicinal purposes and has the potential to be developed into various useful natural products. Natural products are part of the natural wealth of our country, and an important source of livelihood, from agriculture and food, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals industry. As McChesney wrote in 2007, trustful humanity placed its faith in the belief that for every ill there exist a cure in the plants of field and forest. Thus, it is not surprising that 80% of world's population still continue to rely on plants for primary healthcare needs.
