Abstract

Development and industrialization in Malaysia have become more aggressive leading to an increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation. The government and non government organization handled many program in order to raise public awareness and promote education on waste minimization and recycling in order to reduce the MSW dumping to landfill. This research focus on composition of recyclable materials from MSW, the economic value of recyclable materials and the level of awareness and participating of public in recycling activities at Kota Kemuning. The approaches for this study were data collected through segregation of solid waste and distribution of questionnaires to the residential areas. The results show that the total composition of recyclable materials in Kota Kemuning is 207.2kg and the economic potential of recyclable materials from the solid waste for five days equivalent to one week collected in Kota Kemuning is RM56.23. The level of awareness and .participation of the public in recycling activities in Kota Kemuning is moderate.
