Abstract

This paper reports on the effectiveness of using drama as a strategy to teach speaking skills in English Language at South Besut Zone, Jerteh, Terengganu. The purpose of this study is to confirm the effectiveness using drama as one of the sources in the teaching of speaking skills, as they should learn in English as a second language. Based on the study made, 1 hope to highlight the importance of drama and its significance to the teaching of English as a Second Language. A survey of methodology comprising of questionnaires and interviews were used to study the effectiveness of the independent variables (drama) on the dependent variables (the students and the teachers perspectives). The population of this study was all the Level Two primary school students in South Besut Zone, Jerteh, Terengganu. A stratified sampling was used to obtain a sample of 25 Year - Four students and 2 English teachers as respondents in this study. The data was tabulated and presented in forms of tables and percentages to determine the effectiveness of using drama as a tool in the teaching of speaking in an ESL classroom. The study suggests that drama should be used as one of the materials in the process of teaching and learning English as a Second Language and also the teachers need to be exposed more to other types of fun, interesting activities so that they can improve their methodology of teaching.
