Abstract

This book presents the background and application of corpus linguistics research to language teaching. Research, process and procedures related to corpus analysis are presented and discussed to enable novice corpus linguists to handle corpus research. In the following sections, one is able to see and comprehend that any corpus of language can be used for such work. I have, however, undertaken to demonstrate in this book that a corpus of specialised English in the domain of commerce and finance from the British National Corpus (BNC) can be used together with stateof- the-art search and retrieval software to reveal lexical grammatical patterns which play a salient role in that variety of English. Bear in mind that these processes and procedures can easily be followed to conduct study and research in other languages too. Hence, the multi-faceted realm and nature of corpus studies and research. The work discussed here is based on a corpus of commercial and financial texts of more than seven million words of present-day English. The methodology employed is a step-by-step refinement of lexical grammatical analysis using available corpus search and retrieval software and tools. Based on single words and grammatical tags, word frequency lists are used to differentiate the most salient vocabulary of the commerce and finance domain corpus (CFDC) by comparison to the general written English of the BNC corpus. The domain-specific nouns then formed the basis for subsequent analyses which goes beyond the word and looked at multi-word combinations. These process and methods described in this book can uncover the ramifications of both formulaic and variable components of the specialised language that students and future employees so much needed in their present and future roles.
