Abstract

This book describes a phytochemical study on some medicinal plants found in Malaysia and also on the synthetic studies of some bioactive molecules and new functional materials. Some important drugs derived from natural resources and the processes involved in the drug discovery are also highlighted. Chemical investigations on some species of genus Ophiorrhiza and Hedyotis (Rubiaceae) have resulted in the isolation of various secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, steroids, terpenoids and saponins. The second part of the book discusses the synthetic strategies towards the chemical syntheses of some bioactive compounds namely lactacystin, codonopsinine and Dysidamide C. These challenging and demanding works have taken us towards the key important skeleton of the target compounds. The final part of the bookfocuses on the chemical exploration towards the syntheses of new functional materials namely poly(p-phenylenevinylene) PPV and its derivatives used extensively in electronics industry today.
